I read Allison’s debut novel, Bastard Out of Carolina, back in 1992 when it was published.  It caught my eye because it was one of five finalists for the 1992 National Book Award.   It’s a tough read since there are graphic scenes of a man sexually abusing his young stepdaughter.   What I didn’t know until posting this quote is that the novel is the semi-autobiographical
